AMD NEWS1

Another AMD First

  1. •Today AMD reached another important milestonein leading the industry toward pervasive 64-bit computing by being thefirst in the industry to demonstrate an x86 dual core processor for 32-and64-bit computing.
  2. •AMD recently demonstrated a 4-socket HP ProLiant DL585 server powered by four dual core AMD Opteron™processors manufactured on the 90nm SOI process.
  3. Dual core AMD Opteron™processorsfor servers and workstations will launch in mid-2005 followed by dual core processors for the client market in late 2005 and will enable AMD to continue its x86 technology leadership.
  4. •AMD Opteron with dual core processing is one more example of howAMD is extending it’s architectural leadership. AMD’s evolutionary Direct Connect Architectureconnects two cores on the same die.
  5. •AMD is delivering technology leadership to benefit our server and workstation customers and giving our partners a competitive advantagein the market.
  6. •Since the AMD64 platform was first discussed publicly in 1999, we have indicated on multiple occasions that AMD64 was designed from the ground upto be optimized for multiple cores.

The AMD64 dual core advantage

  1. Ease of Migration to Dual Core Processors
  2. –HP, IBM and Sun and other system manufacturers will be able to easily incorporate dual core products into their existing AMD Opteron™processor-based designs
  3. –End users can upgrade their existing systems that are compatiblewith 90nm single core processors to dual core processors
  4. Higher Performance Per Watt
  5. –Customers will experience the performance advantages of dual core processors by getting the best performance per watt available inthe market
  6. Direct Connect Architecture
  7. –Best 2-socket and 4-socket architecture for x86 computing
  8. –Addresses and helps reduce the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architecture because everything is directly connected to the CPU
  9. –Directly connects the two processor cores on to a single die to even further reduce latencies between processors

AMD Opteron™Dual Core Overview

  1. •The AMD Opteron™processor was designed from the start to add a second core
  2. –Port already existed on crossbar/SRI
  3. –One die with 2 CPU cores, each core has its own 1MB L2 cache
  4. •Drops into existing AMD Opteron 940-pin sockets that are compatible with 90nm single core processors
  5. •A BIOS update was all that was necessary to get the 4-socket server up and running with dual core AMD Opteron processors
  6. •The 2 CPU cores share the same memory and HyperTransport™technology resources found in single core AMD Opteron processors
  7. –Integrated memory controller & HyperTransport links route out the same as today’s implementation
