Windows XP improves your computer’s wireless networking capabilities by adding support for the IEEE 802.1x security protocol. In addition, Windows XP offers zero configuration and roaming enhancements that make the wireless networking experience more secure and seamless.

Enhanced wireless networking support based on the Wi-Fi (802.11b) standard was added to the Windows operating systems beginning with Windows 2000.

Now, support for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.1x security protocol in Windows XP lets you roam from access point to access point within your corporate local area network (LAN). You can also roam to wireless networking hot spots—for example, airports or Internet cafés with wireless networking equipment installed. Windows XP uses the IEEE 802.1x protocol to identify you and allow you to access these public networks without additional logons.

Access is controlled per–user and/or per–port. This provides precise access control and identification which allows a wide variety of services to be offered. And thanks to the security protocols used in the 802.1X standard, you can use your networks with a higher level of confidence in their security than even wired connections can offer.
